Phantasy Star Zero Remake

Phantasy Star Zero Remake (PSZR) is an open-source passion project designed to bring the 2009 handheld action-RPG to modern, single-screen devices like the Retroid Pocket.

While the original game shares a universe with Phantasy Star Online, its storytelling relied heavily on static anime portraits and a linear, forced-companion structure. PZSR restructures the narrative and gameplay loop to closely align with the classic PSO experience. You are a new Hunter joining an understaffed guild in Dairon City. You take your missions directly from the Principal, and characters like Kai and Sarisa are encountered dynamically as NPCs during your quests, which now utilize in-game models and real-time dialogue rather than full-screen text profiles.

Current Status: Entering Alpha

The project is currently transitioning in Alpha, Core systems are largely in place, the current focus is on making quests complete-able even if the gameplay is not great. Beta will focus on gameplay and making combat more enjoyable. 

Key Features & Updates

• Single-Screen & 16:9: Completely rebuilt from the dual-screen DS layout to play on modern handhelds, monitors, and Linux environments.
• Fluid Movement: Breaking free from the DS's limited D-pad, PSZR features full analog movement. The classic PSO walk and run animations have been re-targeted and ported over, alongside updated attack animations.
• Overhauled Weapon Tiering: The original DS game made every weapon look unique—which meant nothing felt truly special. PSZR adopts the classic PSO naming conventions for basic gear (Saber, Brand, Buster), ensuring that rare drops are highly distinct and rewarding to find.
• New Item Synthesis: Fitting the post-apocalyptic "western punk" setting, high-tech gear isn't just lying around. Instead of wildlife dropping fully functional photon launchers, you will scavenge resources from the ruins of Earth to craft and upgrade your arsenal.
